Groups screen debut of film on

Iran’s nukes

Iranium, a film that examines the international threat posed by a nuclear Iran, premiered on Feb. 8 around the country. About 380 people attended the local screening at the AMC Loews East Hanover theater that night. Danielle Flaum of Millburn, who created the student organization No Nukes for Iran, introduced the film. Bradley Gordon, director of policy and government affairs for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, spoke after the film.

In her remarks, Flaum reminded the audience that Honeywell

International, located in Morristown, continues to do business

with Iran. She urged people to take some action.

“Call Honeywell and voice your concern. Write a letter to David Cote,

CEO and chairman of Honeywell, and tell him that his neighbors in

New Jersey do not want a New Jersey company to do business in Iran,”

she said.

The Film Iran's Leaders Don't Want You to See

Danielle Flaum is a senior at

Millburn High School in Millburn, New Jersey and the founder and chair ofNo Nukes for Iran.

On February 8, 2011, Iranium, a new documentary film addressing the dangers posed by a nuclear Iran to the United States and the international community will be released.

Iranium's nationwide launch event includes premiere screenings at select AMC Theaters and community centers in over 20 cities nationwide including Washington, D.C., New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle, Miami, Atlanta, San Antonio, Tucson, and Minneapolis.

The film focuses on educating Americans about the dangers we face if Iran acquires nuclear weapons. Americans must be properly informed if we expect policymakers to enact appropriate policies. We encourage all concerned Americans to attend the film and to educate others about the nature of the Iranian regime and its stated intentions for America and the international community.

New Jersey teens lead global campaign to prevent a nuclear Iran

While the average high school senior is bogged down by college applications and graduation apprehension, 18-year-old Danielle Flaum’s biggest concern is the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran.

Flaum is the founder of No Nukes for Iran, a non-profit group that raises awareness of the threat of a nuclear Iran that has gone from an idea in the mind of a Millburn teenager to a global organization.

“Last year we were just two teenagers sitting in a room trying to inform people about No Nukes and now we’re a credible source,” said Flaum. “People who weren’t as responsive last year will definitely jump on board [now] and take on this issue without being afraid.”

In November, No Nukes launched its campaign globally in front of the General Assembly of the Jewish Federations of North American in New Orleans, where Flaum spoke and presented a No Nukes pin to Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“It’s still sinking in that I met a world leader,” said Flaum. “To see that someone so important to our world is just as concerned about this issue as I am is nice but it’s good that were on the same page; we’re all fighting for peace.”

After Flaum spoke on the panel, No Nukes reached Uruguay, Argentina, and Brazil.

“The director for Latin America heard Danielle speak and within a week we had everything translated into Spanish and she’s bringing it to college campuses in those places,” said Flaum’s mother, Nancy Kislin.

It all began in October 2009 when Flaum and a group of her friends decided to start a teen advocacy program. Flaum says that they chose to focus on nuclear Iran because of its importance to Americans and Jews.

“It’s the biggest threat to our generation,” said Flaum. “I have a fierce love of Israel, America, and Jews, and I don’t want to live in a world where I’m afraid of a terrorist attack.”

The group first made car magnets to increase awareness and to urge others to advocate for their cause and spread their message, but progress moved slowly. It was not until a fund-raiser at the Lautenberg Family JCC Aidekman Family Campus in Whippany in December last year that things started to take off. The group handed out magnets and posters at United Jewish Communities of MetroWest’s Super Sunday and caught the eye of Israel’s ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren.

“I took a magnet and I handed it to him and I said ‘This is something you should care about,’” Flaum said. “And he did.”

Oren began mentioning the group in his speeches about Iran. In March, he invited No Nukes to Capitol Hill, where members spoke with the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Oren’s support, Flaum said, has allowed the group to reach policy-makers and other important people that they otherwise would not have been able to reach as teenagers.

“When he started spreading our message it gave us a confidence booster,” said Michelle Brauer, a 17-year-old junior and co-president of No Nukes for Iran. “We’ve been in contact with him and his son and they have helped us a lot.”

They soon created a website and banners and traveled around to churches and temples in the region. In June, No Nukes attended a press conference in the New Jersey legislature about divesting from Iran, said Flaum. That same month, the organization led a protest against Honeywell International Inc., a major conglomerate based in Morristown that does business in Iran.

“We asked them and pleaded with them to please get out of Iran,” said Flaum. “It’s not helpful for anyone.”

No Nukes hopes to hold another Honeywell protest next spring, Michelle said. The organization also hopes to have a meeting with the U.S. attorney general’s office to discuss Honeywell’s possible violation of the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act of 2010 and have the company pull out of Iran, Flaum said. She also wants to discuss other companies that may be violating the act.

“I think all of the stuff that has come out makes this a really good time to affect different people around here,” said Flaum. “Now that it is really in the news and people are picking up the paper and reading about it, No Nukes has a chance to expand to places are normally would not.”

Millburn High School senior Danielle Flaum created No Nukes For Iran with the hopes of convincing a local company to cease business operations in Iran. In just six months her initiative has reached the international stage as Jewish community leaders across the U.S., Latin America and Europe are hanging No Nukes banners in synagogues and community centers.

Flaum, along with fellow NNFI member and MHS classmate Michelle Brauer, presented information on the organization at the General Assembly of the Jewish Federations of North America in New Orleans the second weekend of November. The pair passed out buttons and told "a lot of people" about NNFI, said Flaum, but it wasn't until Isreali Ambassador to the U.S. Michael Oren weighed in did Flaum realized how many people were hearing the message.

Oren thanked NNFI during a speech, asking Flaum and Bauer to stand before more than 1,000 leaders of the Jewish community to be recognized for their work.

"It was pretty exciting to hear someone talking about me," says Flaum. "He's a pretty important person and I'm just an 18-year-old girl. It was exciting to get the recognition, because it helps people who had seen our booth take us seriously."

Still excited by Oren's recognition, Flaum was astounded by what happened next. Hours later Oren introduced the girls to Isreali Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"We somehow got to meet him and got to give him a button, which was very, very exciting and cool," recounted Flaum, amazement still clear in her voice. It was a brief encounter, but one Flaum will likely never forget.

"We weren't expecting it. I don't think I could've ever expected that in all my life," she said.

After a busy fall preparing for the general assembly, Flaum and fellow NNFI members are now ready to turn their attention back to Honeywell. With the help of New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez, Flaum is hoping to convince the company to cease all relations in Iran.

"Sen. Menendez went to the U.S. Senate and brought up the issue of Honeywell, and they said Honeywell is currently winding down involvement [in Iran]," said Flaum. "We're currently working on what to do with that statement, how to get them to not just wind down but stop completely."

On Jan. 11, the group will host a viewing of the documentary "Iranium." Guest are welcome to join the group at the AMC Loews in East Hanover where speakers will offer information on the situation in Iran.

While many teenage girls are spending their summers lounging on the beach, Millburn High School rising senior Danielle Flaum is spending the so-called "lazy days of summer" being anything but lazy.

The teen founder of No Nukes For Iran is more likely to be found rallying outside of Honeywell's Morristown offices, encouraging the company to withdraw from all business operations in Iran.

Asked about her inspiration, she said, "I can't stop. I want to keep going. I enjoy educating people and making people aware. I love that when I'm telling people about this issue, I can see their faces change. This is not a chore to me, this is something that I am passionate about and I care about."

In explaining the issue, No Nukes for Iran released this statement:

"Iran continues to defy the International Atomic Energy Agency
(IAEA) and the United Nations in their attempts to monitor its
nuclear activities. A number of Arab states have warned that
Iran's development of nuclear weapons poses a threat to Middle
East stability and could provoke a regional nuclear arms race. In
short, the prospect of a nuclear-armed Iran is a danger to world peace...
Honeywell still continues to participate in projects to develop Iran's
energy industry. A Honeywell subsidiary, Universal Oil Products (UOP),
is currently engaged in expanding and upgrading the Arak Refinery in Iran."

The group, joined by United Against Nuclear Iran and several community
groups, rallied for the first time on June 21. About 70 supporters protested,
holding signs that read "Stopping a nuclear Iran is more important than
profit"and "Shame on Honeywell for supporting Iran."

On Thursday, they received a letter from Honeywell Senior Vice President and
General Council Kate Adams.

"Honeywell complies with all laws in every country in which we operate
and takes this matter very seriously," the letter reads. "Earlier this year
the company voluntarily committed to accepting to new projects in Iran
but we remain legally obligated to complete all our current contracts there."

"That's what we find as a problem," Flaum said. "It means they could be in
another five, another 10 years, or however long. It's a little disappointing,
but it won't stop our efforts." Inquiries into the length of the existing
contracts have gone unanswered, she said.

The teen started the advocacy group, now comprised of 15-20 girls, in
October 2009. She was looking to start a youth group and chose this
issue because "Iran is a really big issue in my heart and it's a really big
issue in the world, so I thought it was appropriate.

"It's unbelievable the support that we've gotten. It's just that everyone,
no matter who it is, everyone can come out and support this. This is
important to me, important to the world, and just that everyone can
come out and support is amazing to me."

The group spent the greater part of the year spreading awareness and
educating people on the issue. They hosted a workshop at Columbia, and
hope to be invited to do so again this year.

Honeywell is the first company they are targeting because,
Flaum said, "Honeywell is literally in our backyard. I can't live
in a state where this is happening."

Flaum encourages those who cannot participate in the rallies to
write letters to Honeywell and its subsidiaries.

The next rally is scheduled for Wednesday at 1 p.m. Flaum said
there will not be as many speakers, though she might make a
statement about the purpose of the rally.

Basically, No Nukes For Iran has one goal. "We're hoping Honeywell
will change their minds." The reasons are obvious for Flaum.
"For world peace, Iran shouldn't have nuclear weapons," she said.

For No Business With

Iran

Danielle Flaum, a junior at

Millburn high school recently stepped

up onto the world stage when she

started a grass roots group called ‘No

Nukes For Iran.’ In one of the group’s

first appearances they marched near

the front of the Salute to Israel Parade

and many of the politicians noticeably

wore their buttons on their lapels.

At a recent Press conference she

said that “History teaches us that

for social change to occur, the

youth must stand up and lead.

“I have tried to live by these words

this year. Our group, No Nukes for Iran,

a group of teens from Short Hills, NJ,

created a “face” for this issue, a logo that

is displayed on banners, on magnets and

on buttons that is now being displayed in

over 25 states and numerous college

campuses.”

The group has enlisted the help, of

national and local agencies, religious

organizations and youth groups they also

have launched a national campaign,

determined to protect the very nature of

world peace.

They have met with officials in Washington D.C.,

here in NJ

and around the country that care deeply

about Iran’s goal to not only develop

nuclear capabilities but also the missiles

to deliver them.

Danielle Flaum asked the people of

NJ to demand of their elected officials to

insure that NJ State government divests

from companies doing business with

Iran.

No Nukes for Iran, was created out of

our Outrage at the possibility that Iran, a

country run by terrorist regime, is racing

to have Nuclear weapons.

Ms Flaum stated that while she repre-

sented No Nukes for Iran but was also

sharing the hope of the youth of America

Standing for Human Rights for all peo-

ple, Standing for peace Standing for a

world free of terrorists threatening our

dreams.

And standing in our way are the

active plans of Iran threatening world

peace;

Threatening the interests of the

United States and Threatening America’s

allies in the Middle East.

She called for NJ politicians to

“Make the wonderful state of NJ an

example for other states and divest from

all companies doing business with Iran.

“We need to use all of our resources

to stop companies from doing business

with Iran.

“Today, take a stand, make this issue a

priority so that you can tell our fellow

citizens of New Jersey, your children and

grandchildren – that you helped to make

the world a safer place for us today and

for future generations.”

Joining Ms Flaum at the Press confer-

ence were Senator Bateman Senater

Robert Singer, Senator Joseph Vitale and

Assemblyman Bramnick who have been

strong supporters and offering encour-

agement to the group’s efforts.

As we raised our posters demanding that Honeywell leave Iran, we were

greeted by passing cars honking their horns in support of the cause.

The cause is very simple, the United Nations joined by the European

Union and the United States Congress have all approved sanctions

which are hoped to persuade Iran to stop its nuclear program resulting in

building nuclear bombs. We credit the EU and the United States Congress

have imposed more severe sanctions than the relatively modest Security

Council resolutions, which gave diplomatic cover for the U.S. and our allies

to be more aggressive in our efforts to impede Iran’s progress towards

making a bomb. But companies like Honeywell stand in the way of this

unified effort. Because it is currently aiding Iran in the development of the

Iraqi refinery which will aid Iran’s capacity to refine its own oil. One of the

major vulnerabilities of the Iranian economy is its dependence on imported

petroleum and Honeywell is helping them overcome this deficiency.

Honeywell is also a major U.S. government contractor. Of all the companies

that do business in Iran, Honeywell does the greatest amount of business

with the U.S. Government, more than $12.9 billion over the past decade.

Honeywell must choose between doing business in Iran and doing with the

United States.

I lived in the Twin Cities for seven years and Honeywell was a major corporate

icon and great corporate citizen, known for many philanthropic initiatives.

Honeywell bought Allied-Signal and moved its corporate headquarters to

Morristown, New Jersey, which was the sight of our demonstration. We

were over sixty strong, involving our Stop Iran Task Force of our

Community Relations Committee, chaired by Jim Daniels,

No Nukes for Iran, teen advocacy group, led Danielle Flaum,

Amir-Abbas Fakhrabar, Secretary General of the Confederation

of Iranian Students, and Eagle’s Wings representatives of the

Christians United for Israel and Rabbi Eric Lankin of the

Jewish National Fund.

Most poignantly stated, the plea of teens who, G-d forbid, would have

to live with a nuclear-armed Iran, as part of their future if our efforts

fail. Quoted in her letter to Mr. David Cote of the Honeywell Corporation

that, “We are committed to confronting the biggest threat to peace

in our lifetime, we call upon the free citizens of the world to mobilize

and do their part to end Iran’s nuclear program. Our group has been

instrumental in educating and motivating the youth of America to

stand up and speak out against nuclear Iran. We are involved in

communities in twenty-five states and twenty college campuses.

To date, we have taken our message to Trenton and to Washington, D.C.

and throughout the country.”

The Danielle’s of the world, founder and chair of No Nukes for Iran,

teen advocacy program, have the most legitimate claim for our attention

as their long-term future depends upon our success in addressing this

most important issue in writing Honeywell at Mr. David Cote,

Honeywell Corporation, 101 Columbia Turnpike, Morris Township, NJ 07960

and calling Honeywell offices at 973-455-2000 to register your outrage

about Honeywell’s concern for profits over doing the right thing for one

of the most serious issues confronting our country.

About 60 people gathered at the Morristown headquarters of the Honeywell Corporation on June 21, hoping to shame the technology giant into ending its business in Iran.

Protesters waved placards and shouted, “Honeywell, get out of Iran, now!” Some cars driving by on Columbia Turnpike tooted their horns in support.

The protest was organized by No Nukes for Iran, an organization founded by a group of local teenagers and cosponsored by United Against a Nuclear Iran.

“We have launched a national movement that is determined to protect the very nature of world peace,” Danielle Flaum, an incoming senior at Millburn High School who spearheaded the rally, announced to the gathering. “We need to use all our resources to stop companies from doing business

with Iran. The time is now!”

Honeywell has been targeted because it is the only company with headquarters in New Jersey doing business in Iran, according to David Ibsen, coalitions director for UANI, which maintains a database of about 250 businesses operating in Iran.

There are “about five or six” other companies on the list that do extensive business in the state that he said might be targeted, including Lukoil.

Honeywell has a subsidiary, Universal Oil Products, that is engaged in expanding and upgrading the Arak refinery in Iran. It also receives $12.6 billion in subsidies from the United States federal government.

It may have been the first time a local company

has been directly confronted about its business in Iran.

The rally was supported by the Community Relations

Committee of United Jewish Communities of MetroWest

New Jersey, the Jewish Community Relations Council of

the Jewish Federation of Central New Jersey,

American Jewish Committee, and StandWithUs.

“Hopefully if enough people turn out to rally against them,

the tides will start to turn and people will stop looking to

Honeywell as such a great corporation,” Flaum told NJJN

before the rally.

Melanie Gorelick, MetroWest CRC associate director, called

Iran the organization’s “number one issue.” The CRC is

urging Congress to impose sanctions on companies doing

business in Iran through their subsidiaries and is urging

businesses with a presence in New Jersey to divest from Iran.

Jim Daniels, chair of the MetroWest CRC’s

Stop Iran Now Coalition, called Iran’s pursuit of nuclear

weapons “a grave and growing national security threat.”

“Ahmadinejad’s access to nuclear weaponry and his ever

expanding support of terror groups around the world…cannot

be ignored,” said Daniels. “A nuclear Iran will change the

balance of power, in the world, as we know it.”

In a letter addressed to David Cote, chairman and CEO

of Honeywell, Flaum, on behalf of No Nukes for Iran, urged

him to end its business dealings with Iran. The letter requests

a meeting with Honeywell. So far, she has not received a response.

When questioned about Flaum’s letter, Honeywell spokesperson

Robert Ferris wrote in an e-mail toNJJN, “We always reply to letters.”

He also provided a statement in response to other questions

from NJJN: “Honeywell is compliant with all U.S. laws and

with all laws in every country where we operate. We have

committed to accept no new assignments in Iran in anticipation

of a change in U.S. law, but are legally obligated to complete

work under current contract. Should U.S. law change and prevent

the company from fulfilling its contractual obligations, we will fully

comply.”

Protesters came to the rally from around New Jersey. They were

joined by a group from an evangelical church in upstate New York

with ties to the MetroWest CRC.

Rabbi Dr. Eric Lankin, chief of institutional advancement and

education at Jewish National Fund and a resident of Highland Park,

said he and his 14-year-old son Ben attended the rally as private citizens.

“We Jews remember quite well that it was the rallies that we had

in cities across the world that brought down the Soviet Union and

freed a million Soviet Jews,” he said. “We want to start a

movement not only in our area but in areas all over the country

where there are companies doing business with Iran.”

Larry Slavin of Rockaway attended the rally with his wife, Helen.

“It’s important for every American to fight against Iran getting

nuclear weapons,” he said. “It’s bad for the whole world.”

For others, like Evelyn Shaw of Scotch Plains, the campaign

has a specifically Jewish component.

“The Jewish community didn’t believe what Hitler said, and the

Americans didn’t believe what Hitler said. But he was serious,” Shaw said.

“And Ahmadinejad is serious, and we should believe what he says. That’s

why I’m here today: to do everything that I can in my power to stop the

nuclear threat that Iran represents to Israel and to the world.”

Ferne Hassan, associate director of American Jewish Committee’s NJ Area,

urged Honeywell stockholders to look beyond their wallets.

“I think stockholders would respect that the stock may not make as

much for them — but what will they be spending their money on if

we’re all blown to smithereens?” she said.

As the United Nations Security Council intensified its economics sanctions against Iran, a group of legislators and Jewish activists gathered together and issued a call to governments and private entities in other states to follow New Jersey’s lead in using divestment to stop Iranian nuclear ambitions.

Assemblyman Jon Bramnick (R-Dist. 21) chaired the June 10 meeting in a tightly packed conference room near the State Assembly chamber in Trenton under the banner of “No Nukes for Iran.”

Bramnick called for “a bipartisan effort to make sure the public is aware of the efforts of the state in bringing attention to the serious problems of the Middle East.”

The Assemblyman quoted Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s statement that “the Zionist regime is heading toward annihilation”; that rhetoric, said Bramnick, is “pure evil.”

Following him at the podium was Assembly member Linda Stender (D-Dist. 22), prime sponsor of the 2007 law that requires state pension funds to divest from companies doing business involving Iran’s defense, nuclear, natural gas, and petroleum sectors.

She said initially New Jersey sold off $14.5 million shares in companies linked to Iran, amounting to $489.1 million.

“We have until January 2011 to fully divest and $11 million to take out of those investments,” she added. “We will remain vigilant to make sure that is done.”

Jewish leaders in the room thanked the politicians for such efforts and urged other municipalities and companies to follow suit.

“A nuclear-weaponized Iran will change the balance of power and the world as we currently know it,” said David Lentz, chair of the Community Relations Committee of United Jewish Communities of MetroWest, who spoke on behalf of the NJ Stop Iran Now Coalition. The group’s members include the State Association of Jewish Federations, the community relations councils of the federations, and the American Jewish Committee.

“We recognize that many governmental subdivisions in New Jersey and elsewhere — counties, municipalities, and other public and private pension and investment funds — have not yet added their voices and taken action to divest,” said Lentz.

“Addressing Iran is not only a United Nations matter or a House and Senate matter. It affects all of us — every county, every public and private pension fund and investment fund,” he said.

State Sen. Robert Singer (R-Dist. 30) added a note of partisanship to the proceedings. “I’m hoping that this press conference today will have the ears of the administration in Washington and our president will understand our concerns for Israel and the well-being of Israel in the Middle East,” he said.

The day before, the UN Security Council had passed new

sanctions against Iran, setting the stage for new and tougher

U.S. actions against the country.

Still, some Jewish commentators have suggested the UN sanctions

and U.S. proposals do not go far enough in isolating Iran.

Singer, whose daughter Sarri was seriously wounded in a Jerusalem

bus bombing in 2003, called divestiture a “key to fighting terrorism.”

A prime mover in the “No Nukes for Iran” campaign has been

“I stand before you sharing the hope of the youth of America,

standing up for human rights for all people,” she said.

She noted that June 12 marked the anniversary of violent street

protests in Iran against the reelection of Ahmadinejad.

“The bloody day serves to remind us that we have the power and

the capability to use all of our resources and unite to stop Iran from

getting nuclear weapons,” she said.

Also taking part were Assemblyman Gordon Johnson (D-Dist. 37)

and Jim Daniels, the Iranian-born chair of the MetroWest

CRC’s Stop Iran Taskforce.

After the meeting, the Rev. Bruce Davidson, who is the director

of the Lutheran Office of Governmental Ministry in New Jersey,

said his office is working to raise public awareness of the divestment effort.

“Any nuclear proliferation in the world is a bad thing. We need

to reduce the threat of nuclear war, not increase it,” he said.

“If Iran is developing nuclear weapons, the target is going to

be Israel. That is absolutely unacceptable.

“Iran may feel it is the target of Israel’s nuclear weapons,”

he added. “However, Israel has never used its nuclear weapons,

and I believe they would use them only if they were attacked first.”

PEACE activists are people who demonstrate nonviolently for peaceful co-existence and human rights. The mob that assaulted Israeli special forces on the deck of the Turkish ship Mavi Marmara on Monday was not motivated by peace. On the contrary, the religious extremists embedded among those on board were paid and equipped to attack Israelis — both by their own hands as well as by aiding Hamas — and to destroy any hope of peace.

Millions have already seen the Al Jazeera broadcast showing these “activists” chanting “Khaibar! Khaibar!”— a reference to a Muslim massacre of Jews in the Arabian peninsula in the seventh century. YouTube viewers saw Israeli troops, armed with crowd-dispersing paintball guns and side arms for emergency protection, being beaten and hurled over the railings of the ship by attackers wielding iron bars.

What the videos don’t show, however, are several curious aspects Israeli authorities are now investigating. First, about 100 of those detained from the boats were carrying immense sums in their pockets — nearly a million euros in total. Second, Israel discovered spent bullet cartridges on the Mavi Marmara that are of a caliber not used by the Israeli commandos, some of whom suffered gunshot wounds. Also found on the boat were propaganda clips showing passengers “injured” by Israeli forces; these videos, however, were filmed during daylight, hours before the nighttime operation occurred.

The investigations of all this evidence will be transparent, in accordance with Israel’s security needs.

There is little doubt as to the real purpose of the Mavi Marmara’s voyage — not to deliver humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, but to create a provocation that would put international pressure on Israel to drop the Gaza embargo, and thus allow the flow of seaborne military supplies to Hamas. Just as Hamas gunmen hide behind civilians in Gaza, so, too, do their sponsors cower behind shipments of seemingly innocent aid.

This is why the organizers of the flotilla repeatedly rejected Israeli offers to transfer its cargo to Gaza once it was inspected for military contraband. They also rebuffed an Israeli request to earmark some aid packages for Gilad Shalit, the Israeli soldier held hostage by Hamas for four years.

In the recent past, Israeli forces have diverted nine such flotillas, all without incident, and peacefully boarded five of the ships in this week’s convoy. Their cargoes, after proper inspection, were delivered to non-Hamas institutions in Gaza. Only the Marmara, a vessel too large to be neutralized by technical means such as fouling the propeller, violently resisted. It is no coincidence that the ship was dispatched by Insani Yardim Vakfi (also called the I.H.H.), a supposed charity that Israeli and other intelligence services have linked to Islamic extremists.

The real intent of breaking the embargo is to allow rockets to be transported to Gaza from Hamas’s suppliers in Syria and Iran. Israel has already intercepted several such ships laden with munitions. Since Israel’s disengagement from Gaza in 2005, Hamas has fired more than 10,000 rockets and mortars at our civilian population. This week, two Hamas rockets exploded near Ashkelon, one of Israel’s largest cities.

Israel has a right and a duty to defend itself from Hamas and its backers. Our struggle is not with the people of Gaza but only with the radical regime that overthrew the legitimate Palestinian Authority and has pledged to seek Israel’s destruction. Each day, Israel facilitates the passage into Gaza of more than 100 truckloads of food and medicine — there is no shortage of either. We, too, want a free Gaza — a Gaza liberated from brutal Hamas rule — as well as an Israel freed from terrorist threats.

Israel will scrupulously review the events surrounding the Marmara’s interception. But Israel will also persist in denying advanced weaponry to Hamas. At the same time, the Israeli government will vigorously pursue peace with the Palestinian Authority, which shares our need for defense against armed extremists. The real peace activists are those who support our vision of a two-state solution, not those supporting the terrorists bent on destroying it.

"No Nukes for Iran" Visits Washington

I looked around the room and it really hit me. I was sitting with Israeli Ambassador Michel Oren in his private study at the Israeli Embassy, Washington D.C. Now, the gift of memory allows me to fully realize the truly amazing day I had along with other members of the No Nukes for Iran Teen Advocacy Program.

Meeting with Ambassador Oren in his study, we discussed the successes and struggles of our No Nukes
for Iran campaign. He thanked us for our passionate efforts and
congratulated us on creating excitement in bringing together many
Jewish and non-Jewish groups around the issue. He stressed that
a nuclear Iran poses a monumental security threat, sharing memories
of growing up after the Holocaust and recalling the promises that his generation made to "never again" let a Holocaust happen. The thought
of Iran gaining nuclear weapons, he said, causes him to have sleepless
nights. We presented the Ambassador with a "No Nukes for Iran"
banner and lapel pin - which, he told us, he loved.

Ambassador Oren informed us that members of the Israeli Consulate
were meeting with Rabbi David Saperstein, Director of the Religious
Action Center, downstairs at the Israeli Embassy. Next thing we knew,
we were downstairs speaking to the members of the Israeli consulate and Rabbi Saperstein, informing them about our project. Ambassador Oren
passed out our No Nukes for Iran car magnets, urging the members of the
Consulates to take this project back to their communities. We were deeply grateful to Ambassador Oren and Benjamin Sack, Director of National Initiatives and State Government Relations, for an incredible morning.

Next we headed to the Rayburn Building on Capitol Hill to meet with
Robert Marcus, staff member for the House of Representatives
Committee on Foreign Affairs, who gave us a crash course in
government and politics. We also met with Jonathan Moore, legislative assistant to Representative Steven R Rothman (D-NJ09), and told
them about our missionincluding what we have been doing and what
we wanted from them: to learn about the Iran Petroleum Sanctions Act
and if - and when - the legislation would become law. At first I did not
think they would really take us seriously, considering that we were only teenagers, but they kindly informed us that we knew more about politics
and the legislative system than many lobbyists and adults they had meet
with before. We left the meeting feeling good.

Next stop was AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, where we met with Leadership Development Director Jonathan Kessler and National Field Organizer Suzy Goldenkranz and learned firsthand from some of the experts about strategies on foreign policy lobbying. AIPAC's staff reminded us that it's not what we have already accomplished that is so imperative but rather our next course of action that will keep people interested in the project. It was an inspiring and challenging meeting.

In our meeting with Rachel Hillman, program associate at the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization, we discussed how to tap into BBYO's energy and encourage its members to join our mission of a nuclear weapons-free Iran. Joining with an international youth movement was another highlight of our day.

Finally, we joined the RAC's L'Taken Social Justice Seminar, a gathering
of more than 300 teens, for a lively Shabbat service where I had the honor
of delivering our message to the gathering. I loved looking out at my peers
and challenging them to stand up, speak out, and declare that this generation of youth wants to live in a world free of terrorists threatening Israel and our safety. I hope I inspired them to lobby their elected officials not only about
the importance of Iran remaining free of nuclear weapons but on any issue
that speaks to them. As I addressed the teens, I realized the meaning of the saying "Everybody can make a difference;" before this moment, I had not realized that I really did how the power to enact change. .

Ambassador Oren, AIPAC, staff members on Capitol Hill. They all asked us the same question: "What is your next step?" The answer is that No Nukes for Iran has just launched a national petition with a goal of 100,000 signatures, thus creating a powerful lobbying tool.

On April 8, 2010, No Nukes for Iran went to Columbia University in New York
City. We had the privilege of working with one of the on-campus
organizations, LionPac, which is associated with the University's Hillel
organization. After setting up a table, we proceeded to launch our
national petition the most traditional way: walking up to people and asking
for signatures. Although some of the students and even administrators
challenged our ideas and positions, it was a great experience. We did a
great job answering questions and refuting opposing comments. We passed out
a great deal of magnets and pins, and even sold some shirts. Our message
against a Nuclear Iran was understood and was accepted by a huge population of
students, making our day a success.

Thank you LionPac and Columbia University for helping us launch this important petition!

Two of my most powerful memories are of my parents coming home from Yom Kippur services in 1973, when I was seven years old, tearfully reporting that Israel had been attacked, and eighteen years later, feeling profound fear when Iraqi SCUD missiles landed in Tel Aviv.

Both of those moments made me feel that Israel was facing an existential threat. Although as a seven year old, I could not articulate it that way, I certainly could as a twenty-five year old. And I most certainly can now, especially when I consider the threat that Iran’s pursuit of a nuclear weapon poses to the security of the United States and Israel.

Possession of a nuclear weapon will only embolden Iran to continue its heinous acts—supporting terrorists, including those who have killed American soldiers (recall the bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut in 1983, for example), denying human and political rights to its own people, financing and training of Hamas, Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad and the list goes on.

Nothing good can possibly come from Iran’s attaining a nuclear weapon. Even if it never intends to use it, the bomb will only make it feel more able to pursue its nefarious agenda. And it would not be surprising if Iran gave nuclear weapons to terrorists who might try to smuggle them into our country.

I do not believe that we can afford to minimize the risk of a nuclear weapon in the hands of Iran. I hope that our government and other governments impose tough sanctions on Iran and that businesses will divest from Iran.

Earlier this year, I participated in a panel at the Jewish Educators Assembly convention. I was there to discuss public advocacy, and I was asked what the most important issue of the day was. This issue – preventing a nuclear Iran – was the one I chose. But it may be that my reasons are not the same as yours, so I appreciate your willingness to read a little more.

Of course, we should be concerned that a government with mortal hostility toward Israel has the potential and proximity to cause a genocidal disaster. In and of itself, this reason is enough to raise an outcry and take deterrent action.

But there are those who argue that the risks to Iran of a nuclear attack on Israel are much greater than the benefits. No bomb is “smart” enough to select its victims; not only Israelis and not only Jews would be the victims of such an attack – if it were even successful in reaching Israel. Retaliation would be certain. Perhaps that would deter Iran.

I can’t pretend to know the mind of Iran’s leaders. But we have plenty of evidence that the availability of weapons is a virtual guarantee that they will wind up in the hands of terrorists, pirates and profiteers. Israel, but not only Israel, would be the target of murderous attacks by groups and individuals funded and armed by the Iranians. We know it already! The existing weapons in the Middle East are in the hands of Hezbollah, Hamas, the Islamic Brotherhood and others, with much evidence pointing to Iran’s involvement. Other terrorist groups, on the left and the right, willing to disrupt Western countries and cultures, are already in the market for advanced weaponry and ready to “shop” in Tehran.

A nuclear bomb in the hands of Iran adds an unacceptable level of anxiety to Israel’s security concerns. But the ability to build, sell and distribute nuclear weapons is a direct threat to Israel and to any nation unwilling to ally itself with the goals of Iranian extremism.

Feel the pride in these young people who have taken on the task of awakening a consciousness in their peers and others to the unacceptability of a nuclear Iran. Follow their lead in building a consensus among Americans and people of good will around the world to isolate and frustrate Iranian nuclear aspirations. Hard work with them now will help to secure a more peaceful world for all of us later.
